Maybe I am missing the mark, since I still have a cable subscription in 2016. However, that isn’t the point of this post.

I decided that I wanted to watch RuPaul’s Drag Race on my laptop, and so I proceeded to make the effort to log in with my Xfinity credentials and watch TV to my heart’s content. This is a seamless process with CNN, which I tend to use the most, but not having done it before on, I was irritated that once I was signed in with my cable information that they were ALSO making me create an account on their website to access content that I PAY FOR.

Not irritated enough to not proceed though.

I clicked the button to create an account with Twitter, and this is where my mind was really blown. Look at the list of things that Viacom will be able to do with my Twitter account.

If you can’t see the image, it says that I’m authorizing Viacom for the following:

  • Read tweets from your timeline
  • See who you follow, and follow new people
  • Update your profile
  • Post tweets for you


Why would anyone say yes to this? Does anyone say yes to this? I can’t imagine anyone being OK with handing over so much control of a personal account. I really hope that people read before they click (although really, we know that lots of people probably read without clicking).

However, beyond the person who would say yes to this, why is Viacom asking for this? I am always looking for companies to appear human, and even those as large as Viacom CAN accomplish this, and they have terribly failed in this particular instance. I would love to know if Viacom is actually posting tweets and updating profiles? I would be so interested to know how the decision-making process was completed in order to arrive at this selection of necessary permissions to connect with a Twitter account.
