VH-1’s Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s, part 2

by Jamie Sanford on April 28, 2011

VH-1’s Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s was on last weekend and so we’re onto part 2 of my recap list with videos and commentary.

Click here to access my iTunes Ping Playlist of all of the songs so that you can preview them and buy them from iTunes if you’re so inclined.

20. Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, “Good Vibrations”

I won a contest on the radio after identifying it after hearing 2 seconds of the introduction. Classic video, and the consensus is solid that no one thought Marky Mark would end up being an Oscar-nominated actor after watching him prance around in tighty whities.

19. Len, “Steal My Sunshine”

Summer all year long when you listen to this song.

18. EMF, “Unbelievable”

[youtube waacof2saZw]

17. Snow, “Informer”

I love love love David Usher, a Canadian artist who sadly has never achieved gigantic success in the US.  Snow guested on David Usher’s second album on a song I love so much, and it made me love Snow that much more. However, this song for me is all about me and my friend Christina singing it together.

16. Kris Kross, “Jump”

Thankfully I never tried wearing my pants backwards.

[youtube 010KyIQjkTk]

15. Blind Melon, “No Rain”

Another example of a band that would have probably had a great future if they had continued, but unfortunately, Shannon Moon died so soon after this song was such a massive hit.

14. Wreckx-N-Effect, “Rump Shaker”

Just shake your rump. Go ahead, do it.

[youtube iKKONgfNONU]

13. Red-Nex, “Cotton Eye Joe”

Never liked this song.

[youtube -tIMGBI6oYA]

12. Digital Underground, “The Humpty Dance”

Still totally my jam to this day.

[youtube DL7-CKirWZE]

10. Joan Osborne, “One of Us”

[youtube USR3bX_PtU4]

9. House of Pain, “Jump Around”

Still makes me jump, and always will.

[youtube U9Q0jPyrja0]

8. Duncan Sheik, “Barely Breathing”

Love this song – was later a big Spring Awakening fangirl and it was nice to reconnect with Duncan.

[youtube 0TLK-i2X9zw]

7. Vanilla Ice, “Ice Ice Baby”

So bad but oh so good.

[youtube rog8ou-ZepE]

6. Semisonic, “Closing Time”

5. Chumbawamba, “Tubthumping”

[youtube 2H5uWRjFsGc]

[youtube sN62PAKoBfE]

3. Gerardo, “Rico Suave”

More abs ftw.

[youtube b6YE3xkdPR4]

2. Right Said Fred, “I’m Too Sexy”

Everyone likes big butts and they cannot lie when this song is playing.

VH-1’s Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s, part 1

by Jamie Sanford on April 26, 2011

Since I was able to catch the VH-1 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s special yesterday, I figured I would compile YouTube videos of all of the songs featured and provide my own commentary, because I can.

If you can’t see the videos, the links will take you there too.

Click here to access my iTunes Ping Playlist of all of the songs so that you can preview them and buy them from iTunes if you’re so inclined.

40. Tag Team, “Whoomp There It Is”

Don’t deny it, we all LOVED this song when it came out.

[youtube Z-FPimCmbX8]

39. The Divinyls, “I Touch Myself”

I wish I remembered when I first heard this song.  It’s just always been there for as long as I can remember.

[youtube wv-34w8kGPM]

38. The Heights, “How Do You Talk To An Angel”

Oh Jamie Walters, I totally watched the 8 episodes of The Heights or however many there were, because I loved nothing more in the 90s than a dramatic show about young people, with horrible style that I could completely try to make work for me.

[youtube csATriX8Ed0]

37. Meredith Brooks, “Bitch”

This song came out in the middle of 1997 and I have distinct memories of listening to it in the car and singing along and being totally jazzed that there was a song full of bitches.

[youtube _ivt_N2Zcts]

36. Inner Circle, “Bad Boys”

I’m still hoping to write a one-hit wonder that will make as much money as this song did.  This is a classic where no one knows any of the verses but everyone knows the chorus.

[youtube f4MRmEPNUxY]

35. Marcy Playground, “Sex and Candy”

I don’t have memories of this song other than it being on, all of the time.

[youtube -KT-r2vHeMM]

34. Des’ree, “You Gotta Be”

[youtube thwr16Anmf0]

33. The Proclaimers, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”

[youtube tbNlMtqrYS0]

32. B-Rock and The Bizz, “My Baby Daddy”

[youtube U1R4rhY3qZ8]

31. Crash Test Dummies, “Mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm”

I have heard more than just this song from the Crash Test Dummies.  My husband bought the whole album back in the day because he liked this song – remember back in the 90s when we couldn’t just go on iTunes and buy a single song, that we had to either hope for a CD single or buy a whole album?  Ahh, memories.

[youtube vIbcqgXh5-4]

30. The Verve, “Bittersweet Symphony”

This is one of my favorite songs ever.  I wish The Verve hadn’t imploded so soon after this song hit it big.

[youtube 1lyu1KKwC74]

29. Shawn Mullins, “Lullaby”

[youtube hG9C0VwruXE]

28. Craig Mack, “Flava in Ya Ear”

[youtube vVOrUjxsVIU]

27. Billy Ray Cyrus, “Achy Breaky Heart”

Right, where everyone “liked” country music for 5 minutes in the early 90s.

[youtube byQIPdHMpjc]

26. Lou Bega, “Mambo #5”

[youtube hfvJOL1gpic]

25. Mighty Mighty Bosstones, “The Impression That I Get”

I love this song and I don’t think I have it in my iTunes. Have to change that immediately.

[youtube NIGMUAMevH0]

24. Belly, “Feed The Tree”

[youtube kgkBuqIKIDU]

23. Haddaway, ‘What Is Love”

Oh this song just represents the decade so well.  It is just such a 90s time capsule in under 4 minutes.

[youtube jpN60KKBAjc]

22. Marc Cohn, “Walking in Memphis”

I remember liking the piano on this song but not really getting the rest.  It is the adult-contemporary one-hit wonder of the 90s.

[youtube hqEASYwINsU]

21. Imani Coppola, “Legend of a Cowgirl”

[youtube eVqeSfGXIwA]

Part 2 of the Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 90s coming soon!  Thanks so much to VH-1 for giving us fabulous countdown specials.

Leave your favorite 90s one-hit wonder in the comments!
