This is another Kevin Smith film! Use this link to get to the posts for the View Askewniverse movies.

Here’s the trailer for Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

I saw this movie in the theatre, the night it opened.  It was supposed to be a big giant opening, but having opened on a Halloween that fell on Friday, it sort of tanked, despite being a movie that I think should have done really well at the box office. I loved it when I saw it the first time and still love to randomly watch it on TV.

So, Zack and Miri are friends who live together, have known each other since they were kids, but have not pursued a romantic relationship.  They attend their high school reunion at a point where they are having trouble paying their bills, and soon after, decide that filming a distributing their own adult film is the way to get out of debt.  Hilarity and sweetness ensues.

The movie stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, who are both great, and the rest of the cast includes Craig Robinson, Katie Morgan, Jason Mewes, Traci Lords, Ricky Mabe and Jeff Anderson.

Note, this is a movie about making a porno. It’s rated R and is not appropriate for kids and probably not for your grandmother.

As I mentioned, I love this movie. If you are into Judd Apatow films or other Kevin Smith films, you will enjoy this movie. I highly recommend buying the DVD.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is available on DVD from Amazon for $7.56.

Clerks 2 (100 Films in 2011)

by Jamie Sanford on April 6, 2011

24. Clerks 2 (Not available to stream on Netflix Instant Watch)

Here’s the Clerks 2 trailer.

[youtube gLvhJ0m5ask]

Clerks 2 is the last film (so far) in the View Askewniverse series, all written and directed by Kevin Smith.

It takes place roughly 10 years after the original Clerks film, and features the 2 main characters from the first film, Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson).

Also featured again are Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith), still drug dealers but having just completed a stint in rehab.

New characters introduced in this film are Becky (Rosario Dawson),

Elias (Trevor Fehrman),

 and Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach).

Clerks 2, like the original, takes plan over the span of a single day.  We find out at the beginning of the film that Dante and Randal have been working at a fast food establishment since Randal inadvertently burned down the Quick Stop, their place of employment during Clerks.  It’s Dante’s last day before he moves to Florida with Emma, his fiancee. Naturally, the day doesn’t go as smoothly as planned, and the day ends up with an unplanned pregnancy, a dance number and a donkey show.

I really liked this movie – so many people were worried that Clerks 2 would suck in comparison to the original film, and this movie doesn’t try to be that.  Yes there are things that are reminiscent, but it tells a new story about these friends and has a lot of heart.  I’ve watched it quite a few times and I really like it.  It is definitely watchable, and definitely one to own.

Clerks 2 is available on DVD from Amazon for $7.99.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (100 Films in 2011)

by Jamie Sanford on April 4, 2011

23. Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Not available to stream on Netflix Instant Watch)

Here’s the Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back trailer.

[youtube cmAJlYElMi0]

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is a fitting title for this movie, a giant inside joke that refers back to the previous 4 View Askewniverse movies. This time around, Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) are the stars.

They find out early in the movie that the comic book with characters based on them, Bluntman and Chronic (referenced quite a bit in Chasing Amy), is being turned into a movie.  Instead of pursuing the money they could make as an extension of their previous likeness rights agreement with Holden and Banky, they decide to head to Hollywood and try and stop the movie.  Naturally, hijinks ensue.  Including a jewelry heist with hot chicks in catsuits.

Lots of great cameos from actors that have appeared in the first 4 Askewniverse movies.  Such as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

Also appearing, Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Jeff Anderson, Brian O’Halloran, Chris Rock, Joey Lauren Adams, Dwight Ewell, Renee Humphrey and more.

This movie is definitely tough to appreciate if you haven’t seen and liked the first 4 View Askewniverse movies.  However, if you have, the inside jokes and references are really fun.  It’s described by Kevin Smith as a “comic book of a movie” and that is completely accurate.  It’s a fun movie and definitely worth a watch, but i highly recommend seeing the other 4 movies first.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is available on DVD from Amazon for $10.89.

Dogma (100 Films in 2011)

by Jamie Sanford on March 31, 2011

22. Dogma (Not available to stream on Netflix Instant Watch)

Here’s the Dogma trailer.

[youtube 20CRw3XdETA]

Continuing our trip through the Kevin Smith View Askewniverse films, Dogma centers around 2 angels, Bartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) who have been banished to live on Earth for eternity.  They are introduced to an opportunity to get back into Heaven, and so begin a journey to get to a church in New Jersey.

Loki and Bartleby are being pursued by the 13th Apostle (Chris Rock), the last living relative of Jesus Christ: Bethany (Linda Fiorentino), and the so-called “prophets,” Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith).  This crack team is determined to stop Loki and Bartleby from going back to heaven and therefore unmaking existence.

There are other fun performances from the supporting players in this movie.  Alan Rickman as Metatron, the first heavenly being that visits Bethany, the Last Scion.

Salma Hayek also appears as Serendipity, a muse come to earth and now stripping for a living.

There was a lot of controversy when this movie came out, and watching it 12 years later, I still don’t get it.  The movie as really funny moments, and great dramatic moments.  I don’t find it as re-watchable as the other movies in the View Askewniverse, but I still like it a lot.  It’s definitely worth a watch.

Dogma is available on DVD from Amazon for $7.99.

Chasing Amy (100 Films in 2011)

by Jamie Sanford on March 29, 2011

22. Chasing Amy (Not available to stream on Netflix Instant Watch)

Here’s the trailer for Chasing Amy.

[youtube PR4rVGiKC9g]

Chasing Amy is the 3rd in Kevin Smith‘s View Askewniverse pictures, and was the follow-up to Mallrats which was less than super successful in the theatrical release. Once again, we’re presented with 2 main male characters Holden (Ben Affleck) and Banky (Jason Lee) –

– although the movie becomes more focused later on the relationship between Holden and Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams).

Holden and Alyssa meet each other at a comic book convention, as both write their own comics and have a mutual friend in Hooper X.   They hit it off the first night that they meet, and during their second outing, Holden discovers that Alyssa is a lesbian and their attraction to each other is not as he had imagined.  They become friends and things progress beyond that, other information comes to light and drama ensues from there.

While people expect comedy from Kevin Smith movies, this movie has a few heavy moments and a lot of heart.  I have laughed and cried during multiple viewings of Chasing Amy.

Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) also appear in the movie, and while they have a short appearance, Silent Bob drops knowledge that moves the story along well.

Dwight Ewell also gives a great performance in this film as comic book author Hooper X.

The Chasing Amy Criterion Collection DVD is available from Amazon for $9.69.
