First things first, I am a Kevin Smith fan. I liked his movies as I was exposed to them(Mallrats first, then I went back and saw Clerks), and then checked out his website in the summer of 1999. Soon enough, I was frequenting a message board where I eventually met my future husband, which makes the soft spot in my heart for Kevin Smith that much bigger. (Coming soon will be a post about Kevin Smith’s podcast network.)

ClerksClerks is centered around the characters of Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) – who work at the Quick Stop convenience store and the attached RST video store.  Clerks takes us through a day of their lives as said clerks, dealing with customers, arguing with girlfriends past and present, playing hockey, going to a funeral and conversing about Star Wars, porn, and whatever else comes to mind.

Veronica and DanteDante’s girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti) appears quite a bit in Clerks, as a college student, wielder of fire extinguishers and Randal-hater. The scene featured above ends in a heated exchange about sexual partners that is one of my favorite moments in the movie.

Jay and Silent BobJay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Kevin Smith) are introduced in Clerks – only to become a major factor in the rest of the View Askewniverse films – all written and directed by Kevin Smith.  Jay and Silent Bob have a dancing scene in this movie that makes me laugh a lot.

I can’t give too much away about Clerks, because the magic is really in the dialogue.  For a movie with not much happening in terms of visuals, the dialogue is witty and funny and it’s obviously why the movie did so well in its release.  If you like comedies with a potty mouth, Clerks will definitely be enjoyable for you.

Clerks X DVDThe Clerks X DVD, loaded with special features and the extended cut of the film, is available from Amazon for $25.49.
