My Holiday Wishlist: Misty from Handbags & Handguns

by Jamie Sanford on December 8, 2010

Hi, I’m Misty from Handbags and Handguns, but my blog followers know me as hotpantsâ„¢. A little bit about me… I’m a firefighter wife, mom to two and work full-time in mortgage. I love celebrities, vampires and shiny gadgets. But most of all, I love Christmas. I love giving more than receiving, but today it’s all about me. Here’s a few things that I would love to receive this holiday season.

Up first, we have these Bizzybee boots from Nine West. I always keep a pair of boots like these in my closet. This year, it’s time for a new pair. I tend to stick to Nine West boots because I know they fit and last several years.

I already have a Nook, but it’s not in color. I obviously need the newest and coolest eReader out there, right? Right.

I tend to want a new fragrance every year. After smelling Kim Kardashian’s perfume my sister-in-law got for her birthday, I’ve been anxious to add this scent to my collection. It smells so good!

I blame Oprah for wanting the next item. I’ve been lusting after these Tory Burch flannel flats ever since she had them on her ‘favorite things’ show. They’re a little out of my price range, but it doesn’t make me want them any less.

Lastly, we have my favorite dress pants from Victoria’s Secret. VS offers dress pants in various fits for every body type. My personal favorite are their Christie fit pants. I have them in several colors and add 1 or 2 pairs to my wardrobe every year.

Since I’ve been good, hopefully Santa will be good to me.

My Holiday Wishlist: Kelly Kreth, The Final Chapter

by Jamie Sanford on December 6, 2010

Striped and Fabulous.

Kelly Kreth

(Today’s guest post was contributed by Kelly Kreth. I “met” Kelly online around 10 years ago, and since then she’s made me jewelry, she’s been the subject of one of the best photos I’ve ever taken, and thoroughly kicked my ass in Facebook Scrabble. Check out her blog which explores optimism and pessimism with great humor and frankness. Check out Part 1 of Kelly’s Holiday Wishlist here, and Part 2 is here.)

Kelly Kreth’s Super Fabulous Wish List:

The fact is that the economy sucks, and I’m not really working (if anyone has a writing or marketing communications management job available, please let me know), so there won’t be anything in my stocking this year. There won’t even be any stocking. Bah Humbug!

However, there will be socks…at the very least, on my Holiday Wishlist:

A fellow blogger, Amanda from Noisiest Passenger put these up on her wish list, and I love them. They kind of look like cross between the socks I had in the ‘70s and modern-day Missoni. At Muji.com you get five pairs of reused yarn socks for $17.50! That is a really good deal. The only issue is that if you order online, I believe they send you whatever colors they have. Amanda recommends going to the actual store so you can pick out the colors you like and can see the sizing firsthand.

While we’re on the subject of feet, if you are less about wool socks and more about glam high heels, YSL Tribute Sandals are so gorgeous. They have the perfect size platform and come in great colors. The only thing I find odd is that the colors Iris and Nude are $760 and the Red sandals are $795. I’m really curious why one color is priced higher than the others. No matter, I’d kill for a pair of the nude ones.

Another blogger recently did an entry about wallets and there was one that seemed to stand out from the rest. This Proenza Schouler beauty, called the PS1 wallet, will run you $165. It comes in a great variety of colors, but my personal favorite is the one in yellow.

Now that we are done talking about feet and leather (some people’s idea of a good night out…) let’s talk a bit about coats. I have found a bunch on ModCloth that I would love to sport around the City. Be sure to check out their whole coat section.

Mini, Lomo-fied.

Kelly's dachshund, Mini.

My favey fave is the Dachshund coat because, well, I have one. Danish designer Nümph has created one of the most unique coats I’ve seen. For $209.99 you’ll have something soft to touch without all of that nasty barking.

Speaking of which, I actually own this but have washed it so many times I need a new one. [They are not supposed to be washed.] Amazon lists it as being out of stock. I got mine at Target but can’t find it there now. It is a popular item you can surely find by Googling “Dachshund Doormat”. It is $19.99.

(Note from Jamie – I found a selection of dachshund doormats, including the one Kelly mentioned, on this site.)

I almost exclusively write with a Sharpie, but I suspect a Sharpie by another name—if that name is Marc Jacobs—is even sweeter. At only $1.50 they make great stocking stuffers.

Last year I set the goal of rereading all 56 original Nancy Drew books. I am almost there—just about 6 to go! While the whole collection would make a great gift for any girl detective aficionado, I’ve had my eyes on Nancy Drew Note Cards (each with the picture of one of her books on the cover), $13.00 for 20. Check out the Sleuth Shop’s website for so many other Nancy Drew-related items, including jewelry, stationary products and even purses. It’s a mystery to me how anyone, young or old, could not love these.

I love sending people postcards, but always ones that are modified in a way that they are more art project than basic quick note. When I saw this mug, masquerading as a post card I flipped. I liked how original it was. It is available at Target for $49.99 in Target’s monthly Red Hot Shop area.

In that same vein of ‘if you like it, put a note on it’, check out these Memo Cannisters ranging in price from $9.99 – 19.99. Nothing says “Merry Christmas” like writing “Merry Christmas”. Chalk not included.

Speaking of the kitchen, Nigella Lawson is one of my biggest celeb crushes. There’s just something so sensual about the way she describes cooking and eats with her hands, thoroughly comfortable with herself. An ex-boyfriend once got me her cookbook, Forever Summer and it is fabulous. One of my favorite things to make in the summer is her Happiness Soup which consists of yellow summer squash, rice, chicken broth and lemon. It’s amazing how something so simple can be so good!

Nigella's Christmas Book.

What better way to end Kelly Kreth’s Holiday WishList 2010 than with Nigella’s whole cookbook collection. Approximately $23.10 each volume. Last year I even got to hear her talk about her holiday one while she was at the Barnes and Noble by my house.

She is also the person who taught me how to make ice cream without an ice cream maker. Thanks to Nigella I’ve made Margarita Ice Cream, White Russian Ice Cream and Sweet Cream Ice Cream all with only a freezer and a Tupperware.

So Happy Cooking, friends, and more so, Happy Holidays.

My Holiday Wishlist: Kelly Kreth, Part 2

Striped and Fabulous.

(Today’s guest post was contributed by Kelly Kreth. Check out her new blog which explores optimism and pessimism with great humor and frankness. Check out Part 1 of Kelly’s Holiday Wishlist here.)

Wow! That first part took a lot out of me. So I think I’ll start this second part off with a nice bottle of champagne. [Hell, 52 bottles. One for each week. Veuve Clicquot Rose is a “perfectly balanced rosé which combines elegance and personality. This delectable champagne is beautifully ample and full of charm. It is a delicious wine in early bloom, a rosé with character, wonderful as an aperitif to be shared as a twosome [or for Kelly, alone] or with dear friends.” $71.99 per bottle.

If this booze doesn’t get me sufficiently soused, I’d also like this vodka, but mostly because I love the bottle. $41.99.

Once I am sufficiently buzzed, it’s not enough to just feel good, but I’ll also need to look good. Hence my desire for sexy undies from my favorite lingerie line, Agent Provocateur. I’d pretty much take any of the pieces on the site, but if I had to pick one it’d be this Alina bra, $180 and panty $180.

Whenever I travel or even just stay the night at someone’s home, I always hate having to carry my big daytime bag and also bring a smaller, fancier clutch for evening. Tiffany’s of Breakfast at… fame has come up with a gorgeous solution. This metallic tote reverses to tan for a day look and has a smaller gold clutch attached for evening. How brilliant! Holly Golightly would think it was darling, darling. It is part of their new leather collection, and costs $595. If you aren’t hot for beige and gold, their other color combos are: Tiffany blue and platinum, coral suede and gold, and black and onyx.

And speaking of Tiffany’s, I’ve always wanted two carat diamond stud earrings. These beauties will run about $11,000, but as you all know, as cliché as it sounds, diamonds are forevah.

Now that my ears are a’sparkling, I’d want my wrist to not be naked. I’ve passed the TENO store in Soho tons of times and always marvel at this bracelet. For $1650, it seems pricey for rubber and some gold, but it is a wish list…

I have a flat-screen Bravia tv in my bedroom but it is only 26 inches. I’d love a 40-inch one for my living room. (Currently available for $1,349.)

And now that I’d no longer have to invite those who want to watch tv with me to lay in my bed, I’d get a new couch. Because I am neurotic about keeping everything in my home black, white and red. I’d get this couch, the Antoinette Fainting Sofa at Urban Outfitters for $578.

In case there still is someone who’d like to lay in bed and watch tv with me, I’d get an assortment of these creative black and white pillowcases at Urban Outftters for $28 a pair.

And on that note, I am exhausted; to all a good holiday and to all a good night.

My Holiday Wishlist: Kelly Kreth, Part 1

(Today’s guest post was contributed by Kelly Kreth. Before I begin, I want to make all readers aware that the one thing—actually the top three things—– I want most of all are not on this list. While these things are omitted because they can’t be purchased, I must also disclose that I am not so altruistic that “world peace” is one of the three. I’m far, far shallower.

I’ve debated over how to organize this list. Should it go from cheapest to most expensive? Practical to most luxe? Or should it be grouped by likeness? I’ve opted to list them in a way that is more narrative than listicle:

I’m all about learning new things so the first group are not tangible items, but rather, EXPERIENCES:

A few years ago I took Fine Cooking 1 at the Institute of Culinary Education which has excellent Recreational Cooking Classes. I’d really like to take the second part of that. These comprehensive multi-day courses run about 25 hours over five days and cost about $595. Of course, I’d be happy with any of their one-day courses. Groups are up to 12 people whom you cook with and then afterwards you sit communally, drink wine and try-out your creations.

While I’m a Microsoft PAINT expert, I just bought Photoshop and would love to take a Graphic Design Course. Full-time classes run for three months; Part-time classes run for one year.  These programs run at $9,950.

I’m an avid reader and love all things literary. I’ve always wanted to be a part of the New York Public Library’s Young Lions. Memberships run from $350 for the most basic program to a whopping $10,000 for the most comprehensive. Even at the lowest level, the events and benefits are thrilling. Drinks and debates take place at member forums, private film screenings are held with Q&As afterwards, etc.

Young Lions Co-Chair Ethan Hawke and Committee Member Uzodinma Iweala at the Young Lions Fiction Award.

I’d love to go on a two-week safari to Africa. Expect to pay anywhere from $5000 to $15,000 per person.

My favorite spa experience in Manhattan is in Koreatown at Juvenex Spa. I’ve been on the receiving end of a 90-minute massage and a 60-minute full body scrub and both were excellent. Prior to treatments, you are invited to use their igloo sauna and cold pool. After your treatments you are given tea and fruit. After 7pm the spa is co-ed and it is open all night. Seeing that this is a WISH list, I’d opt for the Full Day Premium with Spa Lunch & Gift Bag – Any 6 Treatments – $725 [plus tip] which basically includes any SIX treatments, lunch and gift bag. Yowza! I especially like that this is one of the few spas in the area that provide women and men with paper bathing suits; I’ve been to others that only provide towels and scrubs are done in public completely sans clothing. Yikes!

Several years ago I was the recipient of a certificate for a dinner for two with wine pairings to Per Se, one of Manhattan’s most expensive and raved about restaurants. Located in the Time Warner Center, it took me about a month to get reservations, but it was surely a birthday dinner to remember. Each day there is a new nine-course tasting menu (plus amuse bouche ) that is $275 per person and also a vegetarian tasting menu which costs the same . Wine pairings are about $150 extra. One of the things I recall most—I’m a bit fuzzy because I had a glass of wine with each course—was the incredible butter. The waiter explained it was from the same set of cows in some exclusive farm. Again, sketchy on the details, but not on the amazing taste.

As you can probably tell from the aforementioned experiences I desire, I’m a hedonist—a very lazy one. Hence my yearning for a full-year of weekly maid service from Maid for You New York. I have a 750 sq. ft. apt. in Manhattan, but the service can do any size residential or commercial space. Prices vary depending on size of unit and chores desired. I’d go for the works: cleaning, laundry, upholstery steaming, etc. Now if only they sent Teri Copley. [I think only olds will get that reference!]

Stay tuned for Part Two of Kelly Kreth’s Holiday Wishlist which will feature more traditional, tangible gift items such as jewelry, clothing, electronics, music and books.

My Holiday Wishlist

by Jamie Sanford on November 24, 2010

Today is the first post in a new segment for the holidays called “My Holiday Wishlist.”  I’ve asked a number of friends in the blogging world to contribute posts with their picks for what they would like to receive this holiday season.  Naturally, I have to go first!

1. Doc Martens White Skull Boots

Let’s see, I love Doc Martens, I love skulls on my clothing, so this is an obvious choice! Also they are a great deal at $59.90 from Amazon.

2. Coach Poppy Leather Highlight Bag

I had a big love affair with Coach this year, after having their products be off my radar for a while.  All of their outreach using fashion bloggers, the Poppy project that let anyone participate (including me), the amazing Poppy collection, it has all added up to me being slightly obsessed.   This bag is calling me because 1, it is not black and since I wear black all of the time, color in my bags is important; 2, that leather looks super supple and fabulous (sorry vegetarians); and 3, it has a removable strap so I can use it in all sorts of situations.  Come on, look at that color! I love it.  The Poppy Highlight is available for $328 from Coach.

3. Sigma 17 – 50mm f/2.8 Auto Focus Wide Angle Zoom Lens

I love to take pictures, and my husband does too.  We have a similar lens to this one and it’s just a fantastic lens for everyday shooting, it’s great while on vacation, 18 to 50 is a perfect range to get a variety of shots.  I have a Sigma lens that makes pretty pictures, so this would be a good addition to our lens collection so that we don’t fight over the version that we already have! The Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 is available for $599 from Amazon.

4. 3-Wing Shoulderpiece by Zana Bayne

As I mentioned, I wear black all of the time, so I like jewelry, bags, etc, to be interesting.  Well, it gets no better than this simple but amazing set of shoulder wings from Zana Bayne Leather.  I read Zana’s blog, and her style is so fabulous too.  I would totally rock these shoulder wings though, and they are a hot deal at $85 from the Zana Bayne shop on Etsy.

I don’t make an official list of what I want during the holidays any more, so this was fun! I am really excited about the wishlists coming in from other bloggers.  If anyone reading this would like to contribute a post with their own wishlist, please contact me!
