Yearly Recaps

Best of 2017 | Kat Von D Beauty

by Jamie Sanford on January 3, 2018

Happy New Year!

I have more “important” posts to work on, about goals and such things, and I will get to that, but during a discussion of “2017 beauty favorites,” I realized that Kat Von D Beauty is absolutely my favorite makeup brand of 2017.

In addition to new products, I’ve picked up some items that are on their way out that made their way to Marshall’s.

There are links below, but here’s a breakdown of some favorites:

  • Lips: I got a few studded kiss lipsticks at Marshall’s, including in the shade Lovecraft, which is my new favorite lip color. I also picked up liquid lipsticks, including sets of minis. I don’t like having mini versions of most products, but liquid lipsticks are perfect for downsizing.
  • Perfume: Kat Von D Beauty has 2 perfumes, Saint and Sinner. I like them both and have small versions of each one.
  • Face: As Kat Von D Beauty shifted to offering the Shade & Light face palette with interchangeable pans, the originals made their way to Marshall’s, so I picked mine up for half price. I am a contouring newbie, so we will have to see how it goes, but so far, I find these powders to be incredibly blendable and easy to apply lightly so I don’t look like a mess.
  • Eyes: I did not get all of the eyeshadow palettes released this year, that would be too many, but I did pick up some of the Shade & Light Eyeshadow quads at, you guessed it, Marshall’s. It is paint-by-numbers eyeshadow, and is great if you want something super simple and fast, but that still looks like you tried. I also picked up the limited-edition Metal Matte Mini palette, since I have the monster-sized one, and I love it so much, but it is not portable. The mini is a great option, and if you haven’t tried out the Metal Crush eyeshadows, this is the perfect way to try multiple colors at a much better price point. The regular Metal Crush eyeshadows are $21 each, and this palette is $39, so you can see the value.

Links to these products are below. Happy 2018!

2017 Instagram Roundup

by Jamie Sanford on December 29, 2017

It’s that time again. The end of the year, and lots of Instagrams to go through.

Let’s get right into the yearly recap.

After a chill NYE with the boys, we went to our favorite park on New Year’s Day. We would end up on a lot of trips to this park all year.

Pete was in NJ for work, and we had a few chances to hang out.

Wine tasting with the boys.

Back at the park, too warm for a normal winter.

We escaped to Florida for a little trip, and toured the campus of Florida Southern College. You can see my full posts on this experience here.

We also went to the Everglades and took an excellent airboat tour.

We also managed to be there at the right time for a trip to the Florida Strawberry Festival.

Back at home – I took this photo of my favorite immigrant.

Different views of the Flatiron Building.

Estate sailing has not become old yet. Old houses are still the weirdest, most interesting museums.

Dad visited and we went to Rutt’s Hut, because you have to.

I posted about the Met Costume Institute’s “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” Exhibition a LOT. It was beautiful.

We had a great evening with Stevie Nicks.

We went to our first air show. (Together, that is.)

We went to a local zoo and William bonded with the budgies.

Back to Florida for a wedding and we finally went to the Giraffe Ranch with Mom and Dad! Look at this beautiful creature! <3

Amazing skies at Mike & Amy’s wedding.

An uneventful July ended with a bang, when I got an email about a surprise Nine Inch Nails show on a random Monday night at Webster Hall.

Random stop at the Gingerbread House, which has seen much better days.

More estate sailing, and another weird thing I should have purchased.

Got together with the girls and selfied with Wadee’ah.

Went to the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival with William, and we had poutine in the cold.

We got fancy for David and Brian’s wedding!

Halloween dinner.

We love the fall. A lot.

Will and I had a photoshoot to feature my forest queen antler headpieces. Images can be seen here.

We ventured out to a different park, this time at Ramapo Reservation.

We went to a most excellent Gary Numan show on Will’s birthday. Here’s a video of one of my favorite songs from the show. Watch out for the arm at the very end. So good.

We have not traveled nearly as much this year as we have in the past few, but I intend on changing that for next year. Here’s to another year of Instagrams!

2016 Instagram Roundup

by Jamie Sanford on December 30, 2016

As always, I can’t believe it’s time for year-in-review posts!

Let’s go over the best in my Instagram for the year.

Estate sailing was in full effect early in the year. It’s a good way to keep busy on grey winter Saturdays.

It snowed, a lot.

Another estate sale, this time with handpainted garbage cans.

Estate sailing with the boys. Not sure how I would survive without my partners-in-crime.

More estate sale decay.

We had this amazing visitor at my office.

We spent a lot of time in the park system of Bergen County. It was colder this day than we planned for.

You know things are changing when part of the party consists of trying to make the babies smile in unison.

The beginning of warmer weather means more opportunities for Flatiron Building photos.

We located some more of my ancestors in local cemeteries!

We escaped the room!

I planned another random adventure, this time to Penn’s Cave in Pennsylvania.

I made my first flower crown and we went to the NYC pride parade.

We went on a ferry boat in Lake Ontario to a wonderful wedding!

I got to wear one of my favorite dresses EVER.

I visited my friend Wadee’ah and watched her make cake for her custom cake company, Terry’s Heaven-Lee Bakery.

We went to Florida for Nan’s 90th birthday. One day, Will and I invaded her house and we made Pistachio-Rose Clouds, which are super delicious.

Nan’s birthday party definitely had a theme. Mom had been talking about it for 2 years.

We stayed at a house with this view in early August, in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

We caught some lightning outside of our window. I think this is the best lightning photo I have ever taken! The Sony NEX-6 has served me well.

We took a few trips to the Met, one in particular to see Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.

Still regretting not buying what we called the Chewbacca painting at one of the oddest estate sales that we’d ever been to.

When the light looks like this, you have to take a photo.

I was already obsessed with the Snapchat bee filter, so I had to try it again once I decided to go with turquoise hair.

Will accompanied me to the Martha Stewart Weddings Bridal Market party, where he then indulged me by trying all of the photobooths.

Here’s our family photo at the pumpkin patch/apple farm.

Halloween look number 1 was a complete success. I took an existing headband with battery-powered skulls and turned it into a gothy flower crown.

I fully embraced any and all 90s style throwbacks that I could.

Cooler weather and changing leaves put us back on track for long walks in the woods and on trails.

We went to Las Vegas with 28 other people and renewed our wedding vows for our 10th anniversary.

The Bellagio fountains have the same level of picture-worthiness as the Flatiron Building.

I created a number of travel detritus still-life photos. They are one of my favorite ways to create memories of our trips that are really fun to look back on.

Still trying to be a little bit of a photographer, and then being surprised and mildly annoyed when my subject turns on me and then I accidentally make a photo that is WAY better than what I intentioned. It feels like cheating.

I surprised Will with a trip to New Orleans for our birthday weekend!

Here is Will in the Napoleon House, our new favorite bar.

We got to spend a few minutes with Jason after a dinner at Sylvain, a new favorite in New Orleans. I’m going to collaborate on a New Orleans guide with William in Q1.

Back home and back to estate sailing. We ended up in a top 5 weirdest house, with an OBGYN’s office in the basement. Brian’s face says it all.

It was exciting to be home for Christmas and to be able to have Christmas Eve with Brian and David, who just recently got engaged! I love nothing more than adventuring with these 3 men, and spending a quiet Christmas Eve with them was the best. We ate some delicious Honeybaked Ham and extravagant side dishes, played Bucket of Doom, and exchanged gifts. It was relaxed and amazing.  (The previous link is an affiliate link, which means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase using this link.)

I think that is all for the recap. I am wishing you all the best for 2017.

Instagram Roundup #126: 2015 Year in Review

by Jamie Sanford on January 1, 2016

Here are all of the other Instagram Roundups!

The first Flatiron photo included snow!

I had dinner in January with my sister and her mother-in-law, Joan. Sadly, at the end of this year, Joan lost her battle with cancer. #fuckcancer

We continued going to estate sales, including the best one ever, at a teacher’s former home.

March brought a road trip through parts of the south, and we ended up in New Orleans, a favorite destination.

We went on an airboat tour, and I got to hold this little gator!

In April, I went to Florida for my Mom’s birthday, and surprised everyone else in my family too!

Mom and I baked together.

I also fished with Dad and Pete.

I also hung out with my nephew Cooper.

It was a year full of visits to our local parks.

I also tried new chip flavors, like All Dressed, from Canada.

I took a wonderful course called Miracle Worker, and met a bunch of amazing ladies.

I got to spend much time with wonderful friends.

David and I conquered the corn dogs at the fair.

We went to a mineral museum to see a room of fluorescing rocks!

I found a rooster at the state fair that looked like David Bowie’s character in Labyrinth, Jareth.

I wore a hat at almost every opportunity.

Lots of instafortunes.

We had 2 lovely weekends at the Jersey Shore.

We had a ball at #theknotgala in October.

More Flatiron photos were taken.

Halloween was eventful and one of the most fun I have had in ages.

I tweeted something that charmed me and it became my most popular tweet ever.

I took William to Pennsylvania for a weekend of trains.

I got to have dinner with my beautiful sister in November.

We went to Sandy Hook in NJ – more on that soon.

We took a holiday road trip, and started out strong, getting selfies with Santa Claus and Ms. Virginia!

We also had a great stop in Charleston, South Carolina. I wish we would have had more time there.

In addition to seeing our family, we got to spend time with friends. The selfie stick resulted in too many options to not share them all.

We made our final stop at Congaree National Park on our way home. A lifetime of smirky selfies with this wonderful man will never be enough.

Top 5 Posts of 2014

by Jamie Sanford on December 31, 2014

So here we are, at the end of 2014. The year was filled with blog posts that I really enjoyed creating and worked very hard on. None of those ended up being in the top 5! I will admit though, that the ones I love are also the longest and maybe a bit harder to digest.

So here are the top 5 for this year!

1. Broadway Lighted Vanity Makeup Desk from Vanity Girl Hollywood

From October 2012, I feel like this is a completely unhelpful post for most people. However, the title and such make for happiness in Googleland.

2. Product Picks #3: Organix Brazilian Keratin Therapy Hydrating Keratin Masque

This is from March 2013. Actually helpful though, I give my honest review of this hair masque.

3. Video Shopping: Adam Savage – Everyday Carry

From April 2013, the Adam Savage Everyday Carry post was sparked by watching Adam’s video on Tested.com and looking up every single thing.

4. Product Review: Aura Paint by Benjamin Moore.

Way back in January 2010, I reviewed Aura paint, and it is STILL my most visited blog post. Benjamin Moore should be paying me for this.

5. Product Pick #6: OPI Natural Nail Strengthener

From August 2013. Another product review that hopefully is helpful! I do love the product.

Is this a bad sign for my content? Everything with the most activity is pretty old. Which means it has had more time to be indexed. I am happy with the content in 2014 and intend to continue on the brand experience journey in 2015.
